{"id":8215,"date":"2020-09-18T19:34:57","date_gmt":"2020-09-18T19:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:10151\/?p=8215"},"modified":"2020-09-18T19:34:57","modified_gmt":"2020-09-18T19:34:57","slug":"what-the-tiktok-ban-means-for-brands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jp.umww.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/what-the-tiktok-ban-means-for-brands\/","title":{"rendered":"What the TikTok Ban Means for Brands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"first-graph\" class=\"inline-ad-para\">TikTok advertisers are now in a state of limbo, much like the app itself, which was close to a deal to continue operating in the U.S. until the\u00a0<a class=\" inline-paragraph-link\" href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/article\/digital\/us-curbs-wechat-transfers-limits-tiktok-app-starting-sunday\/2281656\">Trump administration issued a new order<\/a>\u00a0today that would essentially hobble its future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-ad-para\">Advertisers, agencies and marketing partners were sent scrambling to figure out what the latest Trump order meant for doing business with TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>Joshua Lowcock, chief digital &amp; global brand safety officer at UM, says the presidential edict was \u201cvague\u201d on how the TikTok ban affects advertising. \u201cWe have not yet received advice from TikTok, so are currently advising impacted clients to seek their own legal counsel on whether it is appropriate, in the short term, to continue to advertise on TikTok,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Another agency executive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, says that Trump\u2019s order does not cover media buying, so ad campaigns seem to be OK to run. \u201cI\u2019m hearing media buying is not one of the actions prohibited by this order, but obviously we are being watchful as to how this will affect the platform&#8217;s desirability over the medium-to-long term,\u201d the agency exec says. \u201cFor now, it\u2019s still an incredibly relevant audience for brands that want to be part of culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The TikTok\u00a0<a class=\" inline-paragraph-link\" href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/article\/digital\/why-tiktoks-oracle-deal-green-light-advertisers-keep-spending\/2280806\">uncertainty is not new for advertisers<\/a>. Since August, the Trump administration has been waging a pressure campaign against the popular Chinese-owned app, threatening to ban it if it does not sell its U.S. holdings. The president and his advisors have labeled TikTok a national security threat, and they have tried to force the company to sell to Oracle, which was co-founded by Larry Ellison, a well-known Trump ally.
